MANY people have their own theory as to how much they can drink before going over the limit, but an experiment tomorrow night is expected to show just how wrong those theories are.
Six volunteers will be breath tested as they drink four standard drinks over two hours to show just how quickly alcohol has an affect on their bodies.
Each drinker will also be consuming a different strength of alcohol.
The participants’ blood-alcohol levels will be recorded on a board for everyone to see after each breath test.
Bundaberg police Senior Constable Danielle Loftus, who is organising the event, said Year 11 and 12 students were encouraged to come to the Drink Rite information night with their parents.
“At the end of the year when we give the Schoolies information we are worried that might be too late,” Snr Const Loftus said.
“The message still is, and always will be, if you are going to drink alcohol – do not drive,” she said.
The school-based police officer said the night was a fun way to show how to drink responsibly.
“Many factors determine the effect alcohol will have on a person at any given time, but the Drink Rite program shows participants how quickly standard drinks can increase their alcohol concentrations,” she said.
Snr Const Loftus said the event was not just for future drinkers.
“During previous Drink Rite events we have had a positive response from the patrons and have found that most drinkers are keen to monitor their alcohol consumption,” she said.
“People are generally surprised at the difference in readings for drinkers who are consuming alcohol of varying strengths.”
Volunteer Brydon Beer, 21, said he was looking forward to the night.
“It will be interesting to find how long it will take and to find out how much I can drink before I’m over the limit,” he said.
Mr Beer said when drinking he was never quite sure how high his blood-alcohol level was.
The event will start at 6pm at Across the Waves and is expected to run until 8pm.
